The South Dakota Department of Health released a statement saying the first case of West Nile Virus for 2017 was found in a man over 60 in Davison county reports the Rapid City Journal

Dr. Lon Kightlinger, epidemiologist for the SD Department of Health, says that in severe cases the virus can cause a stiff neck, confusion, paralysis, a coma, or even death if the virus invades the spinal cord.  Kightlinger says that South Dakota has a high number of cases involving West Nile Virus.  Since 2002, 2,359 human cases have been reported.
