On Tuesday, March 10th, Rapid City voters will determine whether or not the proposed Civic Center expansion will be authorized, or if the proposal will be killed. According to a Rapid City Journal article, the expansion itself would cost $180 million, and the bonds would be paid for from Rapid City's Vision Fund. It would take 30 years to pay off the bonds, in which the total amount paid with interest would be approximately $420 million.
Supporters of the expansion believe this would be a better investment instead of paying tens of millions of dollars to make the Civic Center ADA compliant. Opponents believe the expansion is too costly and would limit any other city improvements for the foreseeable future.
