Pennington County Commissioners are deliberating adding a wheel tax as part of the FY2016 budget. The Rapid City Journal reports this tax usually costs $16-$20 per wheel per vehicle. Imposing the tax, the county would be eligible for state funds to help fix roads and bridges. This fund was approved in the 2015 legislative session. In order to receive the funds, the tax would need to be implemented by January 31, 2016. If the commission votes for the wheel tax, voters could repeal it. Some Commissioners support using the general funds instead of an additional tax.
The Pennington County Commission has until the end of July to design a provisional budget. The first Tuesday in September they will hold a public hearing about FY2016 Budget.
