State Committee Rejects Proposed Uranium Mining Regulations

According to a news story in the Rapid City Journal, environmental groups in South Dakota are lamenting the decision of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources committee to not pass a bill that would have placed tougher restrictions on Powertech and its proposed in situ mine near Edgemont.  The bill would have given the state authority over the site, which would be able to enforce and  ensure that Powertech was meeting all state requirements for its mine, including the restoration of the site's groundwater to the conditions set by the state, rather than the federal government.
