Spearfish Voters Approve Spearfish Rural Fire Protection District

Voters of the Spearfish fire protection area overwhelmingly approved the creation of a new fire protection district, reports the Black Hills Pioneer. The measure was approved by a vote of 459 to 37. The next step in creating the district involves the circulation of petitions among residents of the district which must then be submitted to the county auditor’s office.

Additional fire protection has become necessary following the development of an official Spearfish Fire Department for fire protection within the city limits. While the City of Spearfish agreed to provide protection to the fire protection area for three years, which expires at the end of 2017.

Taxes will be raised for property owners within the fire protection district. The mill levy is expected to be approximately at the 0.4 to 0.5 mill-mark.
