Spearfish VFD Votes to Disband

After 140 years, Spearfish will no longer have a volunteer fire department. Firefighters voted Sept. 16-18 to disband the fire department, reports the Black Hills Pioneer

Fire department officials cited the lack of an individual willing to serve as chief due to a large, unpaid time commitment, and they cited a months-long disagreement with city officials. Firefighters had sought a fire protection district that would raise revenue from property taxes and increase the department's budget. In addition, the city has 37 volunteer firefighters when 63 is what is needed.

City officials have vowed that Spearfish will not go without fire protection, but there is no plan in place yet. The volunteer department plans to function until Jan. 31, 2016.

The city has posted an analysis of the fire department from 2013.
