The Firewise Communities program honored the residents of the Mountain Plains 1 and 2 subdivisions in Spearfish with a glass flame statue, the Black Hills Pioneer reports.

The subdivisions have worked for 10 years to meet the program's guidelines for preventing wildfire from claiming structures. Firewise is a program through the National Fire Protection Association and co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the U.S. Department of the Interior and the National Association of State Foresters.
