Spearfish Forms Fire Protection Task Force

A newly appointed task force will work to shape the future of fire protection in Spearfish after the non-profit Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department voted Sept. 29 to dissolve early in 2016, reports the Black Hills Pioneer

The 10-member task force, appointed by Mayor Dana Boke, is dominated by past members of the SVFD and is comprised entirely of emergency responders. The task force is expected to complete its work in a matter of weeks, as the existing fire department will dissolve no later than Jan. 31.

The 134-year-old fire department voted to disband in the face of dwindling volunteer numbers and disagreement with city officials about the creation of a fire protection district for taxation purposes.
