The Spearfish City Council approved a $1.5 million deal to buy 165 acres of land adjacent to the Black Hills Airport, reports the Black Hills Pioneer. The land will be used in part to build a second runway.
The FAA is currently reviewing a plan to transfer ownership of the airport from Lawrence County to the city of Spearfish. Approval is expected by the fall.
A second paved runway is needed to meet FAA requirements that planes be able to land no matter which direction winds are blowing.
The 165 acres being purchased has been in the Carlstrom family since 1906 and was once owned by Seth Bullock and Sol Star.
