The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) announced a plan to build a new research facility in east downtown Rapid City. According to a Rapid City Journal article, the research facility would cost approximately $20 million and would be located on land previously held by the Imperial Hotel but has since been donated to the school by the landowners.
SDSM&T President Heather Wilson stated she believed the research facility would create hundreds of jobs for students.
The Board of Regents and South Dakota state legislature first need to approve of the project. If it is approved, plans could be drawn up by December 2017 and construction finished by fall of 2019.
