South Dakota Legislative Session Continues

The legislative session resumed Tuesday in Pierre, with a myriad of new bills coming before legislators in committee meetings and on the chamber floors. According to KOTA Territory News, this week lawmakers in South Dakota will discuss bills concerning journalist protections, sports betting, and the teaching of gender identity in elementary and middle schools.

South Dakota’s new governor, Kristi Noem, called for a reporter shield law in her State of the State Address last month. The law would provide legal protections for journalists who refuse to disclose information or sources. There is also a proposal in the Senate to legalize sports betting in Deadwood.

Several bills concerning education policy will come to committee this week as well, including those that would require high school students to pass a civics test prior to graduation and prohibit instruction about gender identity or expression in South Dakota public schools.
