Rapid City Taking Proposals for Civic Center Consultants

Mayor Steve Allender wants to bring in consultants for the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, specifically the Barnett Arena. KOTA News reports that the purpose is to conduct a market study to find out if the arena is filling its role, presently and in the future.

The Civic Center Resolution Task Force has been spending the year researching the Civic Center and looking for solutions to the building's ADA and building code violations. Besides fixing the physical problems, the task force also wants to make sure that the Civic Center remains economically viable.

The Civic Center has been under scrutiny for several years, both for the ADA issues and to find out if the Barnett Arena needs to be updated or expanded. Past stories and documents are linked in the Black Hills Knowledge Network's online news archive.
