Rapid City Police Appoint First Cultural Advisory Coordinator

Vaughn Vargas has been hired to lead the Rapid City Police Department's Cultural Advisory Committee. Vargas is a Native American who had run-ins with the law in the past, but has since turned his life around. Both Rapid City and the nation have seen increased racial tension. The Rapid City Journal reports that Native Americans make up 12% of the population of Rapid City, but are the subjects of 59% of arrests. The hope is that Vargas and the committee can better address Native American issues, as well as those of other minority groups.
