Rapid City Mayor and Councilwoman Disagree on Parking Fine Wavier

Mayor Steve Allender is ready to close the book on approximately 10,000 unpaid tickets, but he may have opposition on the city council. An article in the Rapid City Journal presents Councilwoman Amanda Scott as believing the fine waiver covers a larger number of tickets than originally intended. She says the council discussed waiving fines for out-of-state drivers that would be unrecoverable, while the current plan would also include tickets for residents.

The tickets covered date from 2011 and 2012 with a total of $106,756. By comparison, the city collected $170,000 in paid tickets in 2015. Before the fine waiver goes on the council agenda, it first needs approval of the Legal & Finance Committee, chaired by Scott.
