Rapid City Council Approves Property Tax Increase

In a 6-4 decision, the Rapid City council approves the CPI-based property tax increase.

The Rapid City council approved a Consumer Price Index (CPI) based property tax increase at the August 20 meeting. The 6-4 decision came after the mayor used his tie-break vote to kill a compromise that would use half of the tax increase, reports the Rapid City Journal. Mayor Sam Kooiker has opposed the tax increase, which would increase property taxes by a little over a dollar a month and bring in over $400,000.

What is the CPI? The Institute for Research on Poverty answers that here. Additional information is available from the Department of Labor.
