Pine Ridge Student Chosen For Medical Internship

Shaina Johnson, of Pine Ridge, was recently chosen as an intern for the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, reports South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

Johnson, a rising senior at Black Hills State University, was chosen, along with 35 other interns, from over 900 candidates for three programs funded by the United States Center for Disease Control. Shaina will spend her summer working at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center before returning to South Dakota to study rare diseases at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

As a Gates Scholar, Shaina has always been driven towards a career in medicine and hopes to someday return to Pine Ridge as an epidemiologist. She will be there in August to resume her commitment as a three year BIA wildland firefighter.
