Pennington County Jail Selected as Grant Finalist

The Rapid City Journal reports that the Pennington County Jail was selected as one of twenty finalists for the Safety and Justice Challenge, a grant made possible in part by the MacArthur Foundation.  The Rapid City Journal recently published a timeline of the jail's expansion.  The challenge works to promote alternatives to serving jail time and having monetary bail for some low-level offenses, reports the Rapid City Journal.  The Rapid City Journal reports that the Pennington County Jail hopes to build a new sobering center as one of the alternatives.  The sobering center would work with people suffering from chronic drinking as well as work with first time offenders to prevent them from needing to frequent the facilities.
