NPS Plans Prescribed Burn For Badlands

Anywhere between 250 and 3,900 acres of land on Badlands National Park’s Heck Table will be treated by prescribed burning under the direction of the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service, reports the Rapid City Journal. The burn is scheduled to take place between October 20th and November 10th, weather permitting.

The burn has been prescribed to restore the prairie ecosystem and to reduce buildup of dead and dried plant material. No road closures have been planned, but all burn areas will be closed to the public until the prescribed fire is completed. Areas near the burn site may be impacted by smoke and firefighting maneuvers. If weather conditions prove inappropriate, the burn will be rescheduled until next year.
