More Sales of Pine Beetle-Infested Timber Desired by Congressional Leaders

South Dakota's Congressional members have sent a letter to the U.S. Forest Service chief urging him to increase timber sales this year in the Black Hills to help combat the pine beetle epidemic. It will also eliminate fuel for fires in the area. However, according to the Rapid City Journal article, environmental groups say that using the pine beetle threat is just a cover for more national forest logging. Some individuals are claiming that the pine beetle threat is subsiding and that extra logging is not needed now.
