Lead-Deadwood School District's Overall Facilities Update Estimated To Cost $12M

Lead-Deadwood Schools Move On To Phase 2 Of Facilities Project

With Phase 1 completed, Lead-Deadwood School District officials are turning to Phase 2 of their facilities update, reports the Black Hills Pioneer. Approximately $900,000 was spent on tuckpointing, retaining wall projects, and elevator installation over the summer for Phase 1. The district is set to begin accepting bids for Phase on October 4th.

The estimated total cost of the next phase is $4.1 million and will take place during the summers of 2019 and 2020. The bid will be awarded to three to four contractors per the recommendation of contractor ICS Consulting, Inc..  Phase 2 involves remodeling the third and fourth floors in the Lead-Deadwood Elementary School in 2019 and the first and second floors in 2020. That section was originally built in 1924.

The summer of 2019 is expected to bring renovations to the school’s existing auditorium and adding larger classrooms. Plans for 2020 will include relocating the main entrance and the school’s office and enlarging more classrooms. Phase 3 focuses on remodeling the 1985 portion of the elementary school.

The estimated cost of the district’s facilities update plan, which was developed in 2016, is $12 million. The update hopes to address a decrease in enrollment numbers in the district. Current plans do not call for any immediate building closures.
