The Handley Recreation Center hosted a grant opening for its $700,000 multi-purpose court this week, as reported by the Black Hills Pioneer. The multi-purpose room will host numerous events including roller derby, archery, skating and basketball. Couer Wharf Mine donated $7500 which was used to purchase 100 roller skates for use at the facility.
Couer Wharf also contributed $200,000 toward the reconstruction of the facility, which was matched by the John T. Vucurevich Foundation. The multi-purpose room was part of the first phase of construction, which also created additional classroom space for the Boys and Girls Club of Lead-Deadwood, moved saunas to a lower level, renovated bathrooms, and refinished the outside. Later phases will include a remodeling of the lower level of the center.
