First Paid Assistant Fire Chief Recently Hired in Spearfish

Robert Mathis Jr. will become the first paid assistant fire chief for the Spearfish Fire Department on December 12, reports the Black Hills Pioneer. The Spearfish Fire Department became an official city department in January 2016 after previously operating as a volunteer fire department.

The assistant fire chief will direct the fire department’s training programs and supervise activities at emergency scenes and during training activities. Mathis previously served in the U.S. Air Force for 14 years as a security policeman with training in fire service. He has also served in the Air National Guard as a firefighter in Alaska.
