Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) are hopeful that the district will be approved for a federal grant that would offset the costs of ten new school buses, reports KOTA Territory News. The grant would be issued through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Diesel Program, if approved.
The district will not know whether it has been approved until January. The Clean Diesel Program would not cover the full cost of the ten buses, which will cost approximately $1 million. Instead, the grant would partially reimburse RCAS after the district purchased the buses.
News buses would have the added feature of digital cameras attached in order to record license plate numbers of vehicles that pass the bus while its stop arm is extended. Often people will pass stopped busses hurriedly despite the danger it poses for children potentially crossing in front of the bus.
