The Deadwood City Commission approved a $102,500 bid from MAC Construction, based in Rapid City, for the Upper Main Street Archway project. According to the Black Hills Pioneer, the arch is to be installed at the intersection of Pine Street and Pioneer Way, between the Silverado and Wells Fargo.
The bid was approved at the August 6th Meeting of the city commission. The project had previously been on hold due to bids overshooting the original $50,000 budget. The commission eventually decided to supplement the budget to move the project forward. The city approved contracting for the arch’s design in February, as part of Deadwood’s ongoing wayfinding project.
The new arch will be similar to the one constructed near the city’s Welcome Center, also designed by Berberich Design, but the overall width will be increased. The second sign’s location is based on traffic studies that demonstrate that 68 percent of the city’s traffic enters town via Sherman Street and often turn off without realizing they are so near Main Street.
