Construction will begin on a new solar panel awning at Mount Rushmore on October 1st, reports KOTA Territory News. The structure will cover the top floor of the Washington side of the parking garage and will power over half of the park’s restaurant and gift shop.
Sustainability manager for Xanterra Parks and Resorts Kevin Crosby says that the park has recently undertaken a number of projects to reduce emissions, pollution, and electricity consumption. The solar panels are just one more example of that. The panels will also form an awning that will protect cars parked on the top level of the lot.
Once the panels are installed, upkeep should be minimal. Construction should be completed by December 1st
