The announcement of a command change for Ellsworth Air Force Base could be another step toward bringing the next-generation of bombers to the base and further securing the base’s future. According to the Rapid City Journal article, a $55 billion competition between Northrup Grumman and a Boeing\Lockheed-Martin team to build up to 100 next generation bombers is underway, though the bomber would not come into service until the 2020s. Thanks to the new command change coupled with the expansion of the Powder River training complex passed last month, Ellsworth is in a prime position to acquire these new bombers in the future.
