Coalition Focuses on Homeownership for Native Veterans

The South Dakota Native Homeownership Coalition has formed a new committee that will focus on assisting Native American veterans secure housing, reports South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Specifically, the group will assist Native American veterans with homeowner education, housing and land issues, and subsidies available to help with housing costs.

The committee points out that while the Veterans Administration has a Native American Direct Loan Program, which allows American Indian veterans the opportunity to purchase or build a home on trust land, the process of building homes on trust is lengthy and difficult. Additionally, many veterans are not aware of the options available to them. The committee hopes to work alongside Native Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) to help educate and assist veterans with the home buying process.
