Black Hills Lawmakers Attempting to Pass Industrial Hemp Bill

A Black Hills state lawmaker is trying to pass a bill to make the production and sale of industrial hemp legal in South Dakota. According to the Rapid City Journal article, Rep. Mike Verchio sees this bill as a way to boost tribal economies. Most of the tribal governments also have a large amount of farmland that could be used to grow the hemp, which is stated as being a very easy plant to grow.

Hemp is related to the marijuana plant but lacks the chemical THC, which gives users a "high." It's uses have been varied, including the making of rope, paper and clothing.
