Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

78th Rally Could Outpace 77th

Preliminary numbers are suggesting that this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally could beat out last year’s, making it the second largest in the last ten years. According to KOTA Territory News, this makes Sturgis’ Rally an outlier among other American motorcycle rallies, which have seen a recent decrease in attendance.

The city of Sturgis generally sees a profit of $1 million during the Rally, not including the surrounding area. City manager Daniel Ainslie says that all preliminary numbers seem to show an increase of anywhere from 3 to 7-8 percent higher than last year’s metrics. These numbers are drawn from traffic counts, garbage tonnage, photo counts, liquor sales, and sales tax collected.

While this measurement is only preliminary, official numbers for the Rally will be available after the event’s conclusion.
