70th Anniversary of Black Hills Playhouse

This Friday through Sunday, July 10-12, the Black Hills Playhouse will be celebrating it's 70th anniversary, Rapid City Journal reports. The Playhouse expects up to 200 people to attend the event.

The idea for the Playhouse started in 1945. Originally, the Playhouse was meant to be a summer tour, but that idea quickly became an impossibility. In 1951, the Custer State Park dining hall was converted into a theatre for the Playhouse's use, but that building burned down. The building the Playhouse uses to this day was designed and built by founder Warren "Doc" Lee in 1955.

Attending the reunion event will be Byron Lee, son of "Doc" Lee. Byron was 18 months old when the Playhouse was founded.
