2008- Destination Rapid City was created with the mission, "to foster downtown Rapid City through economic development, creating a vibrant business district rich in appeal for the Rapid City community and its visitors".
2009- Destination Rapid City unveiled plans for a downtown plaza project. A parking lot at 6th and Main was selected as the location for the square.
2010- A Business Improvement District (BID) was created with the purpose of funding the square for 3-5 years.
2011- Main Street Square opens on October 7th.
Main Street Square is located in the heart of Downtown Rapid City, with many options for parking.
Parking Garage- The city parking garage is adjacent to the square with 560 spaces. There is metered public parking available. On weekends, holidays, and Monday-Friday after 4pm parking is free.
Off Street- Parking is available on Main, St. Joseph Street, and other side streets throughout the day. There is a 3 hour limit Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm.
Other- There are parking lots at 8th and Main Street, 6th and St. Joseph Street, and at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Ice Skating- During the winter months the 7,200 square foot outdoor rink is open for ice skating and shinny hockey. The ice rink is rebuilt every fall. In the spring the ice is melted and sod is placed on the lawn. View the Daily Schedule online.
Concerts & Festivals- Throughout the year, over 100 events are hosted at the square including: Bierbӧrse, Summer Concert Series, Country Roots Festival, Art and Wine Festival, Autumn Nights, and Holiday Celebrations.
The Sculpture Project: The Passage of Wind and Water is the largest privately funded public art commission currently underway in the United States. Sculptor Masayuki Nagase is carving the 21 pieces of granite over the next five years during the summer months. Get more information on the Sculpture Project website.
Fountains- During the summer months an interactive water feature is available for visitors to view or cool off in. The fountain schedule is available online.
The Shops at Main Street Square offer a broad range of locally owned shopping and dining options.
