Affordable Care Act

On March 23, 2010 the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act or Obama Care, was signed into law. The Affordable Care Act was created to reform the American healthcare system and insurance industry.   Significant changes include persons with preexisting conditions no longer being denied coverage.  Access has also been expanded to certain types of preventative screenings, such as cancer, diabetes and blood pressure screenings.  
 

Where can you find the Affordable Care Act?

The US Department of Health and Human Services website includes section by section breakdowns of the Affordable Care Act, as well as a PDF of the official Act that can be downloaded.  

 

What is the Health Insurance Marketplace?

The Health Insurance marketplace is a way to find health coverage options in your area with one application.  The marketplace will allow opportunities to compare options side by side and see low cost options, if applicable. 

 

Where can I receive help?

Healthcare.gov's local help search identifies the organizations that will be offering assistance with the application process.

Additionally, Healthcare.gov offers answers for common questions, as well as assistance over the phone at 1-800-318-2596.

 

What will I need when applying?

The pieces of information needed for applying are:

·         Social Security number or document number for immigrants.

·         Employer and information for all who will need coverage (W-2, Pay Stub, tax return, etc.).

 

What if I don’t have insurance?

Adults who don’t have insurance incurred a fee of $95 or 1% of their income, whichever is highest in 2014. The fee for a child is half that of the adult.  This fee was paid on their 2014 tax returns.  Each year the fee will increase with 2015 having an adult fee of $325 and  $162.50 for children or 2% of household income.  The year 2016  will have a fee of 2.5% or $695.
