Summerset, Hot Springs Among South Dakota's 10 Safest Cities

The Black Hills cities of Summerset and Hot Springs have been named among South Dakota's 10 safest cities by SafeWise, a home security company. 

The company analyzied FBI crime data from 2012 and measured both violent and property crimes across the state. Summerset ranked No. 5, while Hot Springs No. 9. 

In Summerset, the FBI recorded no violent crime and a property crime rate of 4.34 per 1,000 residents. In Hot Springs, the FBI recorded a violent crime rate of 1.62 per 1,000 residents and a property crime rate of 6.76 per 1,000 resients.

As a whole, the state has lower crime rates than the nation as a whole. On average, South Dakota cited 3.21 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 20.60 property crimes per 1,000 residents. To put those figures in perspective, the national average is 3.67 violent crimes per 1,000 citizens and 27.30 property crimes per 1,000 citizens.
