Butte County ranks 20th of the 60 registered counties in South Dakota for overall health outcomes in 2017.
A larger percentage of Butte County residents smoke than the national average. 15% of Butte County residents admit they smoke cigarettes, compared to 20% statewide and 14% nationwide.
The teen birth rate in Butte County is higher than the state and the entire country at 36 per 1,000 females, compared to South Dakota at 34 per 1,000 females and the country at 17 per 1,000 females.
Obesity, at 31%, is slightly greater than the state average which rates at 30%. Both are higher than the national average of 26%.
More children in Butte County live in poverty than their peers across the country, with 20% in Butte County compared to just 18% statewide and 12% nationwide.
The rate of sexually transmitted infections is much higher than the national average at 174 per 100,000 people in Butte County versus 145 per 100,000 people nationally. South Dakota has a rate of 493 per 100,000 people.
Premature death in Butte County is 7,100 per 100,000, which is above the state rate of 6,900 and the national rate of 5,200 per 100,000 people.
In Butte County, 12% of residents report poor health, which is similar to both the state percentage of 13 and the national percentage of 12%. The amount of poor physical and mental health days was about the same as the state and national average.

Hospitals & Clinics
Regional Health: Regional Health operates two rural health clinics in Butte County, in Belle Fourche and Newell, and a senior care facility in Belle Fourche. Belle Fourche Regional Medical Clinic is located at 2200 13th Avenue and specializes in Family Medicine and is a branch of the Spearfish Regional Hospital. Services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy, among others, are also available. Newell Regional Medical Clinic, located at 101 E 3rd Street, also offers family medical and lab services.
Community Health Services
Butte County has Community Health Services, which provides such services as immunization, the WIC program and the All Women Count program. Offices are located in Belle Fourche and Newell.
Sports & Recreation
The Belle Fourche Area Community Center is open daily in Belle Fourche. Managed by the city, the facility features a fitness center, pool, gymnasium, auditorium, indoor track, racquetball courts, and meeting rooms. Swimming lessons, fitness classes, community theater, and a variety of children’s programs are also offered.
Located 8 miles east of Belle Fourche, Orman Dam, also known as Belle Fourche Reservoir, was created in 1911 and has over 58 miles of shoreline. The dam is an active site for fishing, camping, boating, and other recreational activities. The Rocky Point Recreation Area, managed by the South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks Department, which provides fishing licenses and camping permits in the area.
Located an hour from Belle Fourche, Devil’s Tower National Monument is a popular hiking destination. The site, which is sacred to the Lakota and several other local Native American tribes, has hosted climbers for more than a century. Visitors can camp at the nearby Belle Fourche River Campground.
The annual Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche is one of the longest continually held outdoor rodeos in the United States, and is held around the Fourth of July each year. The event features a PRCA Rodeo, weeklong carnival for children and families, fireworks, parades, and the Miss Rodeo South Dakota Contest.
