Box Elder - Education & Training

The Douglas School District Board of Education consists of eight members, including two associate members from Ellsworth Air Force Base and the District Superintendent.

School board meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 5:00 pm at the Vandenberg Elementary School library conference room. Exceptions are July and December, when only the first meeting of the month will be held. The August meetings will be August 15 and August 29. If a regular board meeting falls on a holiday, the meeting will be held the next day. Special meetings are held as needed. Find minutes and agendas here.

Preschool & Early Education

The Douglas School District offers a preschools program within its district, through the Carrousel School, but other options are available for parents of preschool aged children and younger. Opened in 2010, the Little Scholars Preschool provides a licensed childcare program in Box Elder.

The YMCA of Rapid City also offers preschool programs for children ranging in ages one to five years old.

With six schools in the district, Douglas School District 51-1in Box Elder had a total enrollment of 2,795 students in preschool to 12th grade, in the fall of 2015 The high school graduation rate was 90.8 percent in 2016, up from 87.2 percent in 2015, according to the South Dakota Department of Education’s 2015-2016 report card.

With a 1.3 percent dropout rate, the district graduated 167 students. 86 students took the ACT exam with an average composite score of 21.0. Other Educational Opportunities

Career Learning Center: Adult education courses such as GED Preparation and Testing and Adult Basic Education are available in Box Elder via the Career Learning Center of the Black Hills.

Military Students

Nearly half of the students in the Douglas School District are affiliated with the military, as well as many staff and faculty. The school is directly outside of Ellsworth's gates, and all schools are within walking distance of each other. For military members coming to Box Elder, a school liaison officer is available for your assistance here.
