Roy's Black Hills Twin Drive-In Theatre will hold its grand opening week May 24-30.

The new drive-in movie theater south of Rapid City - Roy's Black Hills Twin Drive-In Theatre - begins its second season with a grand-opening week May 24-30, according to the theater's Facebook page.

South Dakota Public Radio reported on the enthusiasm customer's have for the outdoor theater.

The $2 million sculpture project, inspired by the natural features of the Black Hills and Badlands, is expected to take three to five years to complete, according to the Main Street Square website.

A $5.25 million, 32,000-square-foot new museum is open in Deadwood; a celebration is planned for Saturday, May 25.

The Days of '76 Museum's Grand Opening celebration will include a Centennial Style Show, a presentation on the museum's collection of historic vehicles, a rodeo cowboy reunion and more, according to a post at KOTA's MyTown website.

Nationally acclaimed library leader charts course for success, advocating for early literacy, ebook publishing and providing research for community leaders.

Jamie LaRue took the worst library in Colorado and turned it into the No. 1 library in the nation.
When he was hired as director of the Douglas County Libraries in 1990, the library in the community of about 60,000 was open four days per week and had no children's story times.
"It was a very depressed library," he told a group of librarians gathered Thursday at General Beadle Elementary School in Rapid City.

Attendees at the Historic Homestake Opera Hous's two April concerts are asked to make donations at the door.

To help other nonprofit organizations in the Black Hills, the Historic Homestake Opera House will host two benefit concerts in April, according to a post on KOTA's MyTown website.

A concert on April 7 benefitted the Children's Miracle Network, and a concert on April 13 will raise money for the Northern Hills United Way.

An immersive visualization called “Resilient Landscapes: a History and Future of Black Hills Floods,” will be the first of 12 presentations over three years at Rapid City's Journey Museum funded by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrationgrant in cooperation with Worldviews Network, according to a report on KOTA's MyTown website.

The Legal and Finance Committee approved a downtown venue for Summer Nights in 2013, despite concerns from some downtown business owners.

The Rapid City Legal and Finance Committee gave initial approval for Summer Nights to be held downtown this summer, however the event will be moving from Main Street to Saint Joseph Street. Discussion opened at the Legal and Finance meeting about moving the festival to Memorial Park after the Promenade is completed this fall.

After the Business Improvement District board declined to pursue a project in Art Alley, a task force was created to address issues regarding the alley in Rapid City. The task force was established by the Legal & Finance Committee at their February 13th meeting.

The sculpture garden proposed for Halley Park in Rapid City is making progress.

A Native American sculpture garden proposed for Halley Park in Rapid City is making some progress. After receiving a proposal from First Nations, the Parks and Recreation Board approved a motion that will direct staff to establish a memorandum between the First Nations Board and the city.

This year's Founder's Day celebration at BHSU marks 130 years.

A chili cook-off and a trip down memory lane with a style show featuring clothing and accessories from BHSU’s past and present will highlight the Feb. 27 event, a post on KOTA's MyTown site reports.

BHSU was originally founded as Dakota Territorial Normal School in 1883, before South Dakota had even gained statehood and before the city of Spearfish was officially established.

A highway project will reduce the size of Gordon Park, and the city must develop a comparable piece of property.

Due to a 1977 National Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, the loss of part of Deadwood's Gordon Park along Sherman Street will lead to the creation of another city park, the Black Hills Pioneer reports.

A 4,000-square-foot section along Whitewood Creek near the Mickelson Trail head will be developed.

Survey reveals that mountain pine beetle has infested 416,000 acres in the forest since first signs in 1996.

In a recent study conducted by the Neiman Timber Company, results show that Lawrence County has been hit the hardest by the mountain pine beetle infestation, according to the Black Hills Pioneer. Since the initial signs of outbreak in 1998, 416,000 acres in the forest have been effected, with Lawrence County seeing by far the largest increase over the last three years, an upturn of almost 300 percent.

James Czywczynski has owned property near the site of the Wounded Knee memorial for four decades, but is now looking to sell the undeveloped land for almost four million dollars. KOTA reported that the price will cover both the cost of the national historic land and the damages sustained during the occupation in 1973.
