The winners of the Native American Mint coin contest named.

On June 3, the Native American Mint selected the winners of its' contest for creating coins that would be created into silver dollars or smaller denominations. The Rapid City Journal lists the finalists and includes images of the winners. The coins cannot be used as real U.S. currency.

Library Districts, a way to stabilize funding and extend library services to rural, unincorporated, and fringe populations.

What is a Public Library District?

Public Library districts are legal in 19 states with the main purpose of using stabilized funding to extend library services.  To enable the creation of Public Library Districts in South Dakota, exisiting district laws need to be modified and will be subject to a vote of the people affected.

The South Dakota Legislature will meet in late June to address construction cost overruns of a new State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.

Governor Dennis Daugaard has called a special session of the SD Legislature to address the cost overruns in the construction of a new State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.  The governor said that contractor bids were considerably above projections.

The popularity of farmers' markets is booming in the Black Hills.

With more Americans seeking locally grown food sources, farmers' markets and community-supported agriculture (CSA) are increasing in popularity.  A farmers' market features food sold directly by farmers to consumers.  CSA  is a 'farm share' program where, for a fee, people share the risks and rewards of farming.  One such CSA is at Black Hills Health & Education Center.  Read the

South Dakota's working-age population, 18-65, has grown at a faster rate than any other demographic group. Projections for the near future show senior citizens will claim that mantle by 2015.

The South Dakota Department of Health has set several goals to track the improvement of health behaviors in South Dakota. Chief among these are lowering the obesity and smoking rates, and increasing colorectal screenings for early cancer detection.

The South Dakota Department of Health has set goals for 2020 with the aim of improving the general health of the population. Three areas of particular concern are obesity, tobacco use, and cancer.

With Infant Mortality Rates in South Dakota higher than the national average and surrounding states, Governor Daugaard authorizes a task force to examine the issue.

Infant mortality rates in the United States as a whole have been dropping, but South Dakota has seen a rise in recent years. Since 2000, South Dakota has seen an average infant mortality rate of 7 (infant mortality rate defined as the number of deaths between birth and one year out of 1000 births), edging out the national average of 6.8, and considerably higher than surround states of North Dakota (5.9), Minnesota (5), Iowa (5.2), Nebraska (5.9) and Montana (6).
