Rapid City - Demographics & Population
Rapid City's population rose to 69,849 in 2010, compared to 67,956 at the time of the 2010 Census. Slightly less than eight in ten residents were white, while American Indians accounted for another 9.5 percent of the city's residents (down from 12 percent at the time of the 2010 Census). Hispanic or Latino residents were another 5.1 percent (up from 4 percent) of the population.
Children under the age of 18 made up 27.8 percent of the population (up from 24 percent in 2010), while seniors over the age of 65 accounted for 14.3 percent of the city's residents.
The Census identified 30,320 housing units in Rapid City, of which 28,586 were occupied and 1,668 were vacant. Homeowners accounted for just over 57 percent of the occupied housing units in the city. Roughly one in four households included children under the age of 18.
