Residents of the Black Hills region participate in civic dialogue and community improvement in many ways. They volunteer for non-profit organizations, contribute to community projects and help their neighbors. 

In a recent survey, for example, Rapid City residents reported that they perceived greater opportunities to volunteer in their community compared to residents in other cities. More frequently than residents in other cities, they also said they watched a meeting of public officials, volunteered, or participated in a club or civic group.
