Rapid City Ponders Parking Problems

On July 3rd, Rapid City hired Walker Parking Consultants to conduct a parking study for the downtown area. The study will help guide changes to downtown parking, including possible changes in parking rates and times and whether another parking structure should be added. The Rapid City Journal notes that one question is what, if anything, should be done with the vacant lot at 5th and St. Joseph Street. As the proposed site for President's Plaza, a parking garage would have been included in the structure. Now that the project is dead, will another developer propose a new building? The city will also need to consider changing parking rates. Presently, metered parking is $.25 an hour in Rapid City, while leased parking is $44 per month. In Sioux Falls, people pay $1.75 an hour for parking, and $75 per month for leased parking.
