Meade County - Health & Wellness

Meade County ranks 32nd out of 60 counties in South Dakota for overall health outcomes in 2017.

Residents of Meade County who admit they smoke is 18 percent, less than the state average of 19 percent, but higher than the national average of 14 percent. 

Obesity in Meade County is at 27 percent, lower than the state average of 30 percent but slightly higher than the national average of 26 percent.

The teen birth rate in Meade County is slightly lower than the state birth rate of 34 per 1,000 females ages 15-19 at 27 per 1,000 females. Thirteen percent of children live in poverty in Meade County compared to 12 percent nationally and 18 percent state wide.

The rate of sexually transmitted disease in Meade County is much higher than the national average of 145 per 100,000 people. Meade County reports that 308 per 100,000 people are infected with an STD. The state average is 493 per 100,000 people.

Premature death in Meade County is at 6,400 per 100,000 people, much higher than the national average of 5,200 per 100,000 people yet slightly lower than the state average of 6,900 per 100,000 people.

In Meade County, 12 percent of residents report poor health, the same as the national percentage of 12 and lower than the state percentage of 13. The amount of poor physical and mental health days was about the same as the state and national average.

Twelve percent of Meade County residents are uninsured.

Hospitals & Clinics

Much of Meade County is served by Sturgis Regional Hospital in Sturgis. The hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital that also has 84 beds for senior care, called the Sturgis Regional Senior Care and a specialty clinic for visiting physicians, called Massa Berry Regional Medical Clinic. The hospital has 24-hour emergency care. To contact the facility, call 605-720-2400. The Sturgis Regional Hospital is part of the Regional Health System. The system’s main hospital is located approximately 30 miles from Sturgis in Rapid City.

 Meade County is also home to the VA Black Hills Healthcare System at Fort Meade in Sturgis. The VA at Fort Meade provides primary and secondary medical and surgical care as well as “residential rehabilitation treatment program (RRTP) services, extended nursing home care and tertiary psychiatric inpatient care services, for veterans residing in South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. The Northern Black Hills features fun outdoors activities of all kinds! Including, but not limited to, hiking, rock climbing, biking, and camping. There's endless opportunities for playing outside. 

The Sturgis Community Center, located at 1401 Lazelle Street in Sturgis, provides a diverse number of programs for the citizens of the greater Sturgis area in a healthy and safe environment. They have cardio and weight rooms open 24 hours a day. For more information, call 605-347-6513.
