Sanford Lab Talks on New Neutrino Experiment Set

The proposed Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment would send a beam of neutrinos straight through the earth from Fermilab near Chicago to a particle detector at the Sanford Lab, according to a Sanford Lab news release.

More than 350 scientists from five countries are working on the proposed experiment. An environmental assessment is underway. The experiment could begin as early as 2017. Read more »

No Sidewalk Expansion Planned

The Rapid City Council decided not to build sidewalks on Omaha Street from Lacrosse Street to Western Dakota Tech, but would have staff look into grants for funding the project. According to the Rapid City Journal, the project would have cost $345,000. Nearby businesses had been polled and of those that responded, only Western Dakota Tech was in favor of the sidewalks. School of Mines Students Receive Research Grants

Research grants allow universities to acquire equipment, hire staff, support students, and pay faculty.  Seven South Dakota faculty members have been awarded state research grants through the South Dakota Board of Regents KOTA MyTown reports a total of $431, 503 was awarded to fund seven grant requests.

Rapid City Airport Posts Profit

Although fewer fliers used the Rapid City Airport in 2012, the facility will post a profit for 2012. According to the Rapid City Journal, the airport came in under budget on a terminal remodeling project, began buying supplies in bulk, and performed maintenance work in-house instead of using subcontractors, which resulted in a preliminary profit of $245,000. Rapid City Facing Nearly $500,000 HUD Cut

Rapid City is facing a nearly $500,000 cut in federal funds for low income housing. Housing and Urban development funds are used to help in housing issues, funding head start, spurring economic development, and other efforts. Last year the city received $466,188 in funds but that may be eliminated completely due to the sequestration cuts according to the Rapid City Journal. Read more »

Non-stop Flights From Rapid City To Houston On Through Summer

Flights will depart Rapid City mid-morning each day and arrive in Houston mid-afternoon, according to a KOTA TV report.

A number of energy companies are headquartered in Houston, and Rapid City is the only airport in South Dakota, North Dakota or Montana that has direct service, according to the news release announcing the flights. Read more »
