Deadwood to Get New City Park
Due to a 1977 National Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, the loss of part of Deadwood's Gordon Park along Sherman Street will lead to the creation of another city park, the Black Hills Pioneer reports.
A 4,000-square-foot section along Whitewood Creek near the Mickelson Trail head will be developed. Read more »
Lawrence County Hit Hardest by Beetle Infestation
In a recent study conducted by the Neiman Timber Company, results show that Lawrence County has been hit the hardest by the mountain pine beetle infestation, according to the Black Hills Pioneer. Since the initial signs of outbreak in 1998, 416,000 acres in the forest have been effected, with Lawrence County seeing by far the largest increase over the last three years, an upturn of almost 300 percent. Black Hills Forest Resource Association
The Black Hills Forest Resource Association provides biological information on the pine beetle and what causes these outbreaks to occur. Information presented gives a history of the beetle as well as how it attacks and kills a tree, resulting in scenes that are currently playing out in the Black Hills region.
